Vingt Mille Lieues sous la Seine 2015 Mobile Homes, Les Berges de Seine, Paris, France.
Vingt Mille Lieues sous la Seine is a new work, created specifically for the Les Berges project. In response to the theme of Mobile Homes and considering the upcoming COP-21 in Paris, I created something that combines a mobile launching installation with a submarine-like vehicle, seemingly ready to be launched into the Seine. The boat looks somewhat like a D.I.Y. submarine, patched together from aluminum plating. When it gets dark, a (solar powered) lighthouse light shines from the boat in slow circles. The title obviously refers to the famous story Vingt mille lieues sous les mers by Jules Verne, once a resident of Paris, and one of the first claimed science-fiction writers. The adventure that we are embarking on in these postmodern times is a very different one. With global warming and the rising of the sea levels, the term Mobile Home might get a very different meaning for human beings in the future. |
